In early September, Rep. Jackie Speier (CA-D) will introduce new federal legislation making it illegal to distribute sexual or nude images without the depicted person’s consent. Surprising to many, the ACLU has been the staunchest enemy of the state revenge porn laws sweeping the country (presently 25 states and DC have passed law). They justify their opposition as protecting free speech. Recently, revenge porn has been removed from their website as an “active issue.” Perhaps they have decided to allocate their limited resources to actual free speech/tech/privacy issues in our country like government surveillance and phone companies’ facilitation of spying.
