Yesterday I was talking to an assembly member’s office about the status of the proposed revenge porn legislation currently pending in Albany. He called in response to the letter I sent on behalf of the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative’s End Revenge Porn campaign. He told me that NYS legislators still don’t really understand what revenge porn is and whether the numbers are big enough to render it an actual problem. To that I respond with a trip to one of the many website where I can do a search of New Yorkers. A quick search reveals 31 pages with ten people per page. That’s 310 people. All New Yorkers, For each of the 310 people on this particular website is a page containing pictures only of that victim with a URL that includes the victim’s first and last name. Each of those 310 victims has gotten an average of 20,000 views. Doing the math we can conclude that New York State’s victims of revenge porn have been viewed 6,200,000 times. On this site. Now multiply that by the number of sites. Are those numbers big enough, legislators?
